It was planned around golf, lakes and clubhouses for people 55 and over, and it grew in phases over the next few decades. Today Sun Lakes is an unincorporated community of about 15,000 residents just south of Chandler, made up of several country club communities: Sun Lakes Country Club, Cottonwood, Palo Verde, Oakwood and IronOaks.
