$200

When added to a home inspection. A standalone sewer cam scan is $250.

**Before your scan**

I run the camera from a sewer cleanout, usually outside near the house. If you know
the cleanout is buried, missing or covered by landscaping, mention it when you book
so we can plan for it. I locate any problem spots from above ground and mark them,
so a plumber knows exactly where to dig.

Why it matters

## The most expensive surprise is underground

Sewer line repairs can be one of the costliest surprises after closing, and you
can’t see them from inside the house. I regularly find roots, grease buildup, bellies
and gaps at old clay pipe joints.

Because I locate problems from above ground, a plumber knows exactly where to dig
instead of guessing.

### How a sewer scope can save you thousands

On this 1971 home the camera found cracked ABS near the city connection and a big
crack in the original cast iron under the house. I went in through the roof vent
stack to reach it.

### A sewer line near the end of its life

With no cleanouts out front, I ran the camera down the roof vent and found corrosion,
a flattened section of pipe, a likely break around 67 feet and cockroaches in the
line.

## What's under Valley homes

| Pipe | Usually found in | What I see go wrong |
| Clay | Older homes, mostly before the 1970s | Roots and gaps at the joints, offsets |
| Cast iron | Homes from the 1950s through the 1970s | Cracks, scale buildup, a rotted-out bottom |
| Orangeburg | Some homes from the 1950s to early 1970s | Pipe that flattens, blisters and [collapses](https://propertyinspectionsplus.com/broken-collapsed-sewer-line-camera/) |
| ABS and PVC | Newer homes and repairs | [Bellies that hold water](https://propertyinspectionsplus.com/standing-water-sewer-line-pipe-belly/), separated joints, construction debris |

## Is it worth $200?

For older homes, homes with big trees in the yard, or drains that run slow, I think
so. One of my videos is called [Save $10K by Spending $200](https://propertyinspectionsplus.com/sewer-scan-save-10000-cast-iron/)
for a reason. On a newer home it is more of a peace of mind add-on. If you want
a second opinion, here is my honest take on [whether sewer camera scans are worth it](https://propertyinspectionsplus.com/are-sewer-camera-inspections-worth-it/).
