Helping Neighbors Live Safely and Comfortably at Home

Making Homes Safer, One Checkup at a Time

Services Provided by 4WARD1

  • Smoke Detector Battery Replacement: Ensure that smoke detectors are always functional to provide early warnings in case of fire.
  • Thermostat Battery Replacement: Keep the home at a comfortable temperature by ensuring thermostats are working properly, preventing issues with heating or cooling systems.
  • Air Filter Replacement: Improve indoor air quality and keep HVAC systems running efficiently by replacing dirty air filters. This is particularly important for seniors with respiratory conditions.
  • Dryer Duct Cleaning: Prevent dangerous lint buildup, which can be a serious fire hazard. Regular cleaning helps improve dryer performance and reduce energy costs.
  • Gas Leak Detection: Use specialized equipment to detect hidden gas leaks, ensuring the home is safe from potential hazards like gas leaks that could cause fires or health issues.
  • Carbon Monoxide Level Detection: Check for elevated carbon monoxide levels, which are odorless and deadly. Protect seniors from this invisible danger with regular testing.
  • Leak Detection Under Sinks: Identify water leaks early to prevent mold growth, which can negatively affect indoor air quality and cause structural damage.
  • Home Safety Inspection Report: After each visit, we provide a detailed report highlighting any safety concerns or maintenance needs. We also recommend trusted contractors for repairs that go beyond minor fixes, ensuring seniors can get the help they need.
  • Minor Safety Maintenance: Perform small but essential fixes around the home, such as tightening loose fixtures or replacing minor parts, to enhance home safety and comfort.
  • Check and Replace Light Bulbs: Replacing burnt-out or hard-to-reach light bulbs helps prevent accidents and improves visibility, making the home safer.
  • Test Electrical Outlets and GFCIs: Test outlets and Ground Fault Circuit Interrupters (GFCIs) to ensure they are functioning properly, reducing the risk of electrical shock, especially in areas like the kitchen and bathroom.
  • Inspect and Secure Handrails: Loose or unstable handrails can increase the risk of falls. We check all handrails and secure them as needed to ensure they provide proper support.
  • Window and Door Lock Checks: Ensure all windows and doors have functioning locks for added security, helping seniors feel safe in their homes.
  • Check and Adjust Water Heater Temperature: Adjust water heater settings to a safe temperature to prevent accidental scalding, which is a common hazard for seniors.
  • Inspect Fire Extinguishers: Check the expiration date and pressure of fire extinguishers to ensure they are ready for use in an emergency.
  • Test and Replace Carbon Monoxide Detectors: Ensure carbon monoxide detectors are working properly. We can also replace batteries or install new units to protect seniors from this invisible threat.
  • Inspect for Trip Hazards: Identify common trip hazards such as loose rugs, clutter, or uneven flooring and recommend solutions to prevent falls, which are a leading cause of injury for seniors.
  • Clean Ceiling Fan Blades: Dust buildup on ceiling fan blades can reduce air circulation and trigger allergies. Regular cleaning ensures better airflow and a healthier home environment.
  • Basic Lawn and Yard Safety Checks: Inspect outdoor pathways, steps, and yard areas for hazards such as uneven ground or obstructed walkways to keep the outside of the home safe as well.
  • Winterization Checks (Seasonal): As the seasons change, we help seniors prepare their homes by checking insulation, window seals, and heating systems to ensure comfort and safety during the colder months.
  • Smoke and Carbon Monoxide Detector Installation: Install new smoke or carbon monoxide detectors if none are present, or if existing ones are outdated. Early detection of fire or gas issues can save lives.
  • Pest Inspection (Basic): Check for signs of rodent or insect infestations, which can pose health and safety risks, and recommend pest control services if necessary.
  • Basic Mold Inspection: Look for visible signs of mold, especially in moisture-prone areas like bathrooms and basements. Mold can affect indoor air quality and cause health issues, so early detection is important.

How You Can Make a Difference

At 4WARD1, our mission is to enhance the safety and well-being of older individuals in our community by providing essential home checkups and minor safety maintenance. Through donor support, we offer free inspections that cover critical areas like smoke detectors, thermostats, air filters, and dryer ducts.

We also use gas leak detectors to identify potential gas leaks and carbon monoxide hazards, inspect for leaks under sinks, and provide a detailed report with recommendations to help our neighbors in need find the appropriate contractors for more extensive repairs. While we can’t do everything, we are committed to addressing the minor safety issues that can make a big difference in keeping homes safe and comfortable."

Your donations make it possible for us to continue serving the seniors in our community. Every dollar goes toward vital maintenance supplies, transportation, and the time it takes to perform each safety check. Together, we can ensure that our older neighbors feel safe and cared for.
