Local history

A short history of Ehrenberg

Ehrenberg is an unincorporated community in La Paz County, on the Colorado River across from Blythe, California. In 1863, mining engineer Herman Ehrenberg surveyed a townsite downriver from the gold camp at La Paz. It was first called Mineral City. A steamboat landing opened in 1866, and the town took Ehrenberg’s name when its post office opened in 1869.

By the mid-1870s about 500 people lived here, and freight from the riverboats went overland to Prescott and the mining camps. Railroads took that trade away, and the steamboats stopped coming after Laguna Dam was finished near Yuma in 1907. The post office closed at the end of 1913. The old pioneer cemetery is the main thing left of the original town.

Housing market

Ehrenberg homes along the river

Most housing in Ehrenberg sits near the river and I-10. A lot of it is manufactured homes, mobile homes and park models in communities such as The Palms at River Edge, Villa Verde, Vista Del Rio and River Sands, along with RV resorts.

You will also find site-built homes on small lots, a few new builds, and river-area lots. Some homes sit steps from the water, and at least one gated community has its own boat ramp.

What I look for

Common home inspection issues in Ehrenberg

  • Extreme heat. July highs here average about 108 degrees. That bakes roofs, sealants and outdoor wiring, and it pushes AC units hard. I check each one and tell you what is near the end of its life.
  • Manufactured homes and park models. I look at the piers, tie-downs, skirting and the plumbing under the home, plus any Arizona rooms, porches or carports added later.
  • Homes that sit empty. A home used only part of the year can hide slow leaks, pest activity and water heaters that sat unused. Thermal imaging is included and helps find moisture behind walls and ceilings.
  • Drainage near the river. I check grading, gutters and the ground around the foundation for signs that water is collecting where it should not.
  • Termites. Subterranean termites are active in the desert. A termite inspection comes with every home inspection at no extra charge.
  • Septic on some properties. Not every lot is set up the same way. If a home is on septic, I note what I can see and recommend a licensed septic specialist.
