Local history

A short history of Globe

Globe was founded in 1876 as a silver mining camp. Legend says it was named for a round, globe-shaped silver nugget found nearby. When the silver ran out, copper took over, and the Old Dominion Mine made Globe one of the most important mining towns in the territory. It became the Gila County seat and incorporated in 1907.

Mining still shapes the area, and Globe’s historic downtown, with its old courthouse and brick storefronts along Broad Street, reflects that past. Besh-Ba-Gowah Archaeological Park preserves a pueblo built centuries before the miners arrived.

Housing market

Globe homes, then and now

Many Globe homes date from the early 1900s through the mid-century, built for miners and their families on hillsides around downtown. There are also newer homes and manufactured homes on the edges of town.

At about 3,500 feet, Globe gets real winter cold. Older homes, hillside lots and freezing temperatures bring problems you do not see as often in the Valley.

What I look for

Common home inspection issues in Globe

  • Older wiring. Some older homes still have knob-and-tube wiring, ungrounded outlets or outdated panels.
  • Older plumbing. Galvanized supply lines and old sewer lines are common in historic homes.
  • Hillside foundations. Stone foundations, retaining walls and drainage on steep lots need a close look.
  • Freeze protection. Exposed pipes, outdoor fixtures and evaporative coolers need to be protected in winter.
  • Wood stoves and fireplaces. Many homes heat with wood. I check what is visible, and a chimney sweep can do a full evaluation.
  • Termites and moisture. Older wood framing near soil and moisture is prone to termite damage.
